Our highly anticipated, access-all-areas Open Day is just around the corner. Last year, we gave you the five foolproof ways to conquer the day, advice that still holds strong for 2023. So this year we’ve decided to give you seven more ways that you can make the most out of Open Day! Our dos and don’ts will make sure you utilise every second you’re on campus (or online) and leave knowing everything there is to know about life at AFTRS.
Do – Register
It might not be the most exciting part of Open Day, but it will help you maximise the day by giving you back your most valuable resource: time. By registering for your free ticket beforehand, you will streamline your arrival and can jump straight into the action once you’re here. For those joining online, registering will ensure you receive instructions on how to stream the info sessions on the day.
Don’t – Be shy
It’s natural to feel a bit apprehensive or reserved but remember that everyone is here for the same reason: to pursue a career doing what they love. Embrace the energy and enthusiasm that surrounds you and feel empowered to strike up conversations. Connecting with your fellow storytellers can offer a different perspective on the day or inspire you to create something new. Not to mention, it’s a great way to start building your network!
Do – Make notes and take photos
Have a pen and paper handy (or your favourite notes app)! Open Day is an exhilarating event and while our memories are good, it never hurts to keep track of any points that stand out. Jot down key notes, dates and names, and of course, any questions that come to mind during the sessions. Your trusty notepad can also double as a journal so you can write down any memorable encounters you had and connections you made. If you’re attending in person, we encourage you to take as many photos as you can, especially while you’re in the studios.
Don’t – Stand still
If you’re not in a session or networking in the Foyer, why not explore our state-of-the-art campus? Tours will be running frequently throughout the day, so don’t miss out on seeing every inch of the building, from our radio studios, video post and editing suites, to our film and TV studios and prop rooms. Don’t forget to check out the AFTRS Library and its extensive collection of books, DVDs, Blu-rays, scripts, screenplays, records and so much more.
Do – Ask questions
There will be plenty of opportunities for you to ask questions of our staff, students, alumni and teachers. After all, that’s exactly what Open Day is for! Introduce yourself and be an active participant in our Ask Us Anything sessions. No question is too big or too small, so as the name suggests, ask us anything and make sure you end the day informed and ready to take the next step.
Don’t – Be a stranger
The excitement of Open Day doesn’t have to end once you leave our campus or log out of a session. Don’t hesitate to keep in touch with us for all those questions you’re bound to think about the next day. Whether you’re ready to apply and need a bit of advice, curious about our upcoming short courses and events, or you just want to know what else is happening at AFTRS, we’re here to help.
Do – Rewatch the sessions
With so much happening on the day, it can be easy to miss a few bits of information here and there. But don’t worry, as we will be streaming the key sessions on our website, you’ll have the chance to rewatch any session that you missed or just want to enjoy again.
