AFTRS alumni are a veritable 'who's who' of the screen and broadcast industries in Australia.

2013:

  • Wayne Blair (AFTRS Indigenous Fellow), Melinda Doring and Warwick Thornton pick up AACTA awards for their work on The Sapphires


2012:

  • Cate Shortland (Directing, 2000) sees her second feature Lore which she directed/co-wrote  released in Australian theatres in September 2012 after premiering at TIFF. Lore has also been put forward as the Australian entry for consideration for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards. Lore has also been nominated for an AACTA
  • Dead Europe - the feature length directorial debut for Tony Krawitz (MA Directing, 2001) nominated for AACTA and also screened at TIFF.
  • Peter Templeman (Directing 2005) debut feautre Not Suitable for Children released across Australia in July 2012 which was written by fellow AFTRS alumni Michael Lucas (MA Screenwriting, 2006) who picked up a 2012 AWGIE for the screenplay. NSFC is also nominated for a feature film AACTA.
  • Underground the latest Directing/Co-writing credit from AFTRS alumnus Robert Connolly (BA Producing, 1995)  EP'd by Tony Ayres (Screenwriting, 1990) screens at TIFF - uncommon for a film produced for television.
  • Rolf De Heer sees his latest feautre The King is Dead is released nationally in Australia in July 2012 and nominated for an AACTA
  • PJ Hogan (Screenwriting 1984)  feature Mental starring Toni Collette, Liev Shreiber, Anthony LaPaglia nominated for an AACTA

  • Wayne Blair (AFTRS Indigenous Fellow) debut feature The Sapphires premiers at Cannes 2012 opens MIFF in August 2012 scooped up an AWGIE and is nominated for an AACTA
  • Bob Connolly ( Documentary 2005) Released Mrs Carey's Concert the latest feature documentary from iconic documentarymaker was released in April 2011
  • Pauline Chan (Directing 1991) sees her latest feature 33 Postcards - starring Guy Pearce and Claudia Karvan - released in Australia in late 2011 and nomionated for an AACTA in 2012
  • Storm Surfers 3D nominated for a Best Feature Length Documentary AACTA  co-written by Chris Nelius (Graduate Diploma Sound, 2003) and also screened at TIFF

TOOMELAH: IVAN SEN


 

Toomelah the most recent feature film from AFTRS alumnus Ivan Sen (Directing 1998) was selected for the Cannes International Film Festival 2011 - Un Certain Regard, and was released theatrically in Australia in November 2011. Set entirely in the remote Indigenous community of Toomelah, on the NSW/QLD border, the story centres on Daniel, a ten year old boy who dreams of being a gangster. Written and directed by Ivan, Toomelah is a deeply personal story, that intimately depicts mission life in contemporary Australia.

THE HUNTER: DIRECTED BY DANIEL NETTHEIM

 

 

With a screenplay adapted by Alice Addison (Screenwriting 2000) from Julia Leigh's acclaimed debut novel, and the feature debut for Daniel Nettheim (Directing 1995) is a slow-burn psychological drama that tells the story of Martin (Willem Dafoe), a mercenary  and modern-day soldier of fortune sent from Europe by a mysterious biotech company to the Tasmanian wilderness on a dramatic hunt for the last Tasmanian Tiger. The films also stars Sam Neil and Frances O'Connor in leading roles. The Hunter was released theatrically in Australia in October 2011.

RED DOG: KRIV STENDERS



Red Dog is the latest directorial project for AFTRS Alumnus Kriv Stenders (Cinematography 1989) Based on a true story about a 'red dog' that united a disparate local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his long lost master. Red Dog was the top Australian film at the Australian box office in 2011 drawing  $21.3 million at the box office…
